Experimental studies on a combined pyrolysis/staged condensation/hydrotreatment approach to obtain biofuels and biobased chemicals

Fast pyrolysis is an efficient technology to convert lignocellulosic biomass a liquid product. However, the high contents of oxygenated compounds and water hinder direct utilization oils. Here, we report upgrading concept obtain products with improved product properties enriched in valuable low molecular weight chemicals particularly alkylphenols. It entails two steps, viz. i) in-situ staged condensation at multiple kg scale followed by ii) catalytic hydrotreatment selected fractions using Ru/C catalyst. Of all oil after condensation, collected condenser equipped electrostatic precipitator (ESP) 120 °C was identified as most attractive for when considering yields composition. The best results (Ru/C, 350 °C, 100 bar H 2 , 4 h) were achieved beechwood walnut shells feedstock, resulting yield (about 64 wt% based on fraction intake) higher heating value about 37 MJ/kg alkylphenols 16 wt%). Overall, it shown that type (beech sawdust, granulates, pine/spruce sawdust) has limited impact which implies feedstock flexibility this integrated concept. • combined investigated. organic suitable hydrotreatment.
